Movie critics-kiss my butt

// March 30th, 2009 // Random Movie Musings

If there is one thing I can’t stand it’s other people telling me what I should and should not like. Don’t get me wrong, I love a recommendation from people, but people telling me that I shouldn’t like something because the cinematography is uninspired is plain ridiculous. Then if I do like it, me and my movie taste are completely discredited because I have an opinion of my own. Yes, I realize that movie critics have quite an extensive knowledge of film and the technical aspects of it. Let’s get real people, movie critics are just failed filmmakers. That is one reason they are highly uncredible. Because people like Roger Ebert have personal vendetta’s against certain people (Robin Williams) and hate every movie he is in regardless of the quality. But my biggest question is why do people listen to movie critics at all? People that just see what the critics  have to say and then base their opinion on that tells me that they have no opinion of their own and have to be told what to like and what not to like. See, I am me and you mr. movie critic are you. We are two completely seperate people with our very own tastes and backgrounds and opinions. How much sense does it make if I just take his opinion for something without experiencing it? Just becaus he doesn’t like it doesn’t mean I won’t. There are certain things in life that appeal to me, so maybe this type of movie would entertain me. Plus movie critics know the power they hold in the success of a movie. The most recent example is the movie Changeling. This movie is absolutely brilliant and yet it got mixed reviews from critics. The ones who are honest talked about how Clint Eastwood made another brilliant movie, but those with vendetta’s that were sick of seeing him get nominated for Academy Awards decided to give it a mediocre review without any real reason. Seriously, I would love to hear some honest and relevant critiques on this movie. The only one that I ever saw was that somebody said it felt long. That goes back to what I was saying earlier, that is completely subjective. That can’t possibly make it a bad movie because it didn’t feel long to me at all and I am sure there are many others that it doesn’t feel long to as well. So I could have read the mixed reviews and just took their word for it, but since I have my own opinion I watched it and realized the brilliance that it is. I guess I just don’t understand why anybody would base their opinion on somebody else’s personal opinion…….it doesn’t make any sense to me. Maybe somebody can explain it to me.

I realize that I would love to be a movie critic, so this all sounds a little hyprocritical. However, I plan on doing critiques in my own way. I plan on expressing my personal opinion on every movie and then saying that if you like this movie, this movie, or this movie, then you may like this movie. Just because a movie is technically sound doesn’t make it good. There are many other ingredients that are necessary. How enjoyable it is should definately be a factor. Lawrence of Arabia is very technically sound and was a great achievement, but I wouldn’t wish that movie on anybody. Just because it is a well made movie doesn’t mean that I have to like it. I am tired of feeling like I have to defend myself if I don’t like a movie that all the critics liked. I didn’t enjoy Slumdog Millionaire. I didn’t. It’s as simple as that. It is very well made but I was bored out of my skull and it just doesn’t appeal to me. Doesn’t mean I don’t know what a good movie is and it certainly doesn’t mean that I don’t understand it. Just didn’t enjoy it, that’s all.

    Justin, you’ve inspired me. I’m going to come out of the closet here and declare to the world that my three favorite movies are Catwoman, Spiceworld and Dude Where’s My Car. The film critics (and the world at large) are just going to have to deal with that!

    Umm….a little discretion is still appreciated.

    A great example of a movie all the critics and everyone else likes is “Citizen Kane.” I absolutely hate that movie and would rather pull my eyeballs out with a hammer than watch a second time.
