Kill Bill vol. 1

Last years rank: 66

Kill Bill is not just a movie, it’s an experience. This is by far my favorite Tarantino movie and his only movie that doesn’t have very much swearing in it at all. No, this movie it’s the violence that makes it rated ‘R.’ The violence doesn’t really bother me though because it’s so over the top it just makes it seem less graphic. Of course everything about this movie is over the top, from the acting to the writing to the violence. That’s why some people don’t like this movie, they don’t know what they are looking at. This movie is an homage to the 70′s kung fu movies that Tarantino has always been obsessed with. Some people don’t get that so when they watch this movie they cant get over how “unrealistic” it is. Well, it’s supposed to be and it is executed perfectly. This movie stars Uma Thurman as “The Bride.” The movie opens with her being badly beaten and shot in the head at her wedding rehearsal by the assassination squad that she used to work for. She doesn’t die but her unborn baby does. She works her way back to being healthy and goes on a revenge quest. This movie is so ridiculously enjoyable and one of the most incredibly directed movies of the decade. Unfortunately, Tarantino got overlooked when awards season came around, obviously because of the excessive violence and because he is a self-absorbed trashy wanker. This scene is toward the end of vol. 1 where The Bride is squaring off with Go-Go who is the body guard of one of the members that tried to kill her. The shot at 58 seconds is absolutely breathtaking. This movie pops up on TNT all the time, you should definitely catch it if you can. There is some violence at the end of the clip. Just a warning. #71. Enjoy.

First off, I’d like to say that I kinda consider Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 as one movie. I don’t know if you have Vol. 2 on your list somewhere, but you should. I can’t really separate them in my own mind though. These movies are in my top 10, no question. I love seeing a movie with a very powerful female protagonist because, let’s be honest, there aren’t many. The Bride is one of my favorite characters ever, unlike “heroes” like Luke Skywalker and the Karate Kid, the Bride is a completely focused non-whiner. She takes control and does what she has to for revenge. It’s awesome.
